Hans Herrmann and Gérard Larrousse second in Porsche 908, 120 metres behind the winning Ford GT40 driven by Jacky Ickx and Jackie Oliver
The le Mans debut of the 917, three cars were entered but were far from fully sorted, but Rolf Stommelen put his on pole by more than 3 seconds. On the first lap John Wolf crashed his 917 and died in the helicopter on the way to hospital. The other two cars were fast but unstable and broke anyway. A year later the 917 dominated the race and the sport 2nd Overall : Class P3.0 - 1st : Class S2.0 - 1st : Class GT2.0 - 1st, 2nd, 3rd
